Videy

After spending the last couple of days in Reykjavik and figuring out the bus schedule we came to the sad realization that on Sunday the bus only runs every hour. This slowed us down a bit and added more walking to our day, but we managed. Today we went to the deserted island of Videy, the only place with less going on than Kansas. Videy was once a fishing town, but after 1940 everyone moved off the island. It is now a bird sanctuary and a tourist attraction. The island has black sand beaches and a bunch of ruins and a monument dedicated to John Lennon, the "Imagine Peace Tower". The monument is a great big white cylinder that light shoots out of it 17 km high and 2 km wide, needless to say we did not see the light. The rest of the island is covered in grass, moss and bird droppings. A real romantic getaway.

Another Day in Reykjavik

After drinking until 4:00am we walked home in the morning light to campers already awake and packing up to head out - and we were just going to bed!! We spent the day checking out more of Reykjavik - flea market (lots of garage sales in one building), town square (with a protest going on), another mall, and the movie theater. We watched "Transformers" in English with an intermission - halfway through they stopped the movie and turned on the lights for about 10 minutes. Almost everyone got up and left to go to the bathroom or get more food (popcorn and soda is about $5).

Well it was our first official day in Reykjavik and we slept until 11am! We took off walking around the city and met a nice couple - the woman is from Montana!! They offered to show us around Iceland! We spent the rest of the day exploring the sites of Reykjavik and then settled in to start drinking in until it got dark. Oh wait, it doesn't get dark here!!

We have arrived!

After an interesting start we are finally in Iceland. For the most part it was an uneventful flight from Boston to Reykjavik. Neither one of us have had more than an hour of sleep and it started to rain in the afternoon so we set up our tent and did a short walking tour of the city and headed to the grocery store to pick up some food. Since we are carrying everything it is difficult to get much, but every little bit of money we can save will help. Hoping for better weather tomorrow so we can do a proper city tour.

False Start

Well, the hour delay was a lie - we were suppose to leave Denver at 1:04 pm and the plane finally left the ground at 7:00 pm and we did not land in Boston until 12:30 a.m. Needless to say we missed our flight to Reykjavik. However, we called ahead and are now suppose to leave Boston at 9:30pm on Wednesday night (24 hours later than originally planned). Lucky for us we know a guy in Boston who let us crash for the night and after a couple of stiff drinks, breakfast at The Breakfast Club and a rainy day in Boston we are going to try this again.

On our way!

Why is it that you start planning for a trip a year in advance, but only pack the night before after midnight?
After spending the last two days running around getting our act together we are finally ready to get on the plane. As usual with any of our trips the plane from Denver was delayed an hour, but it would not be an adventure if everything went as planned.
